About the brand

Rheem Australia has manufactured hot water systems in Australia since 1939 and remains one of the largest suppliers to Australian homes.

Warranty, in plain terms

Rheem cylinder warranties typically run 5–10 years depending on the model, with shorter cover on parts and labour. Warranty is void if the system is not installed by a licensed person.

Parts we carry

Elements, thermostats, gas valves, PTR valves and tempering valves for common Rheem models.

Typical lifespan

Vitreous enamel Rheem tanks typically reach 8–12 years in Southern Tasmania; stainless models and the Rheem Ambiheat heat pumps sit a little longer with maintenance.

Common Rheem faults in Hobart homes

Failed element or thermostat

The most common Rheem callout by a distance. On twin-element Optima tanks the lower element usually goes first, so the tank still makes some hot water but runs out quickly. Both parts are stocked locally and replaced in one visit.

Spent sacrificial anode

On enamel-lined Rheem cylinders the anode is the part that keeps the steel intact. Rust-tinged hot water is the warning; if it is caught early an anode replacement genuinely adds years.

Weeping PTR valve

Rheem PTR valves are a wear item and a constant drip means either a failed valve or excessive mains pressure — worth checking the pressure limiting valve at the same time.

Metro / Integrity error codes

Continuous flow units display a code identifying ignition, flame failure, overheat or flow faults. The code narrows the repair before we arrive.

When replacing beats repairing

Once a Rheem enamel cylinder is past about ten years and weeping from the tank body, replacement is the only outcome — the cylinder cannot be repaired. Component faults under eight years are almost always worth repairing.

Our repair or replace guide sets out the full decision, and the Hobart replacement cost guide explains what changes the price. Symptoms are covered in common hot water problems and the hot water FAQ.
