About the brand

Vulcan is a long-running Australian storage brand, part of the Rheem group, found in many older Hobart homes.

Warranty, in plain terms

Cylinder cover is typically shorter than premium ranges; older units out of warranty are often better replaced than repaired.

Parts we carry

Elements, thermostats and valves interchange with many Rheem-group models.

Typical lifespan

Most Vulcan tanks still in service in Hobart are well past their 8–12 year design life — many we attend are 15 years or older.

Common Vulcan faults in Hobart homes

Off-peak tank not reheating

Freeloader tanks run on a controlled off-peak tariff. A cold tank in the morning can be a failed element or simply the off-peak circuit not being energised — check the switchboard before assuming the worst.

Corroded cylinder

Given the age of most surviving Vulcan units, tank corrosion is the fault we find most. Damp ground beneath the tank is the tell, and it is terminal.

Seized isolation valves

Decades-old valves often will not close, which matters in an emergency — worth testing yours before you need it.

Gas pilot outages

Thermocouple failure on older gas storage Vulcans, a stocked and inexpensive repair where the tank itself is still sound.

When replacing beats repairing

For a Vulcan over about twelve years, we will usually recommend putting the money toward a replacement rather than a second repair. Many owners use the change to move to a heat pump or continuous flow.

Our repair or replace guide sets out the full decision, and the Hobart replacement cost guide explains what changes the price. Symptoms are covered in common hot water problems and the hot water FAQ.
