What to know about solar hot water.
- Running cost
- Lowest ongoing cost where the roof suits.
- Install time
- Usually a full day; roof work is part of the job.
- Boost
- Electric or gas boost covers low-sunlight periods.
- Maintenance
- Valves, anode and collectors need periodic checks.
Solar hot water rewards long-term owners with a north-facing, unshaded roof section. Output is consistent year-round because the boost carries the load through overcast runs. It is the most involved install of the system types, since collectors, tank and roof penetrations all have to be right.
What to watch for
- Neglected valves, which are the most common cause of premature failure.
- Shading from trees or a new build next door reducing output over time.
- Roof penetrations and flashings, which should be checked whenever the roof is.
Solar vs heat pump
The two low-running-cost options, side by side.
| Solar hot water | Heat pump | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy source | Roof collectors plus electric or gas boost | Ambient air plus a small amount of electricity |
| Roof needs | Suitable orientation, pitch and no shading | None — ground or slab mounted |
| Winter output | Boost carries the load through overcast runs | Runs year-round with reduced efficiency |
| Maintenance | Valves, anode, collectors and roof penetrations | Filter, airflow and condensate drainage |
| Best suited to | Long-term owners with the right roof | Homes wanting efficiency without roof work |

Solar Hot Water questions.
Does solar hot water work year-round?
+
Yes, with an electric or gas boost for periods of low sunlight. The boost is what keeps output consistent through winter and long runs of overcast weather.
What maintenance does a solar system need?
+
Periodic checks of the valves, the anode and the boost element, plus a look over the collectors and roof penetrations. Neglected valves are the most common cause of premature failure.
Is my roof suitable?
+
Collector performance depends on orientation, pitch and shading. A north-facing, unshaded section of roof is ideal; we assess the roof before recommending solar.
What happens if the boost element fails?
+
You keep whatever the collectors produce, so hot water becomes weather-dependent until the boost is repaired. It is a routine repair and usually resolved in a single visit.
