The short version

What to know about gas hot water.

Typical service life
Broadly similar to electric storage, subject to water quality.
Replacement time
Usually a half day for a like-for-like gas storage swap.
Common failures
Pilot or ignition, thermocouple, gas control valve.
Best fit
Homes on natural gas with steady daily demand.

Gas storage recovers quickly, which suits larger households running showers back-to-back. Where the property is on LPG rather than reticulated gas, the running-cost picture changes, so it is worth comparing against electric or a heat pump before committing.

What to watch for

  • A pilot that will not stay lit — commonly a thermocouple.
  • Soot or scorching around the flue or burner area.
  • Any smell of gas near the unit: isolate the supply and call.

Questions

Gas Hot Water questions.

Is gas cheaper to run than electric?

+

On standard tariffs gas storage is usually cheaper to run than electric storage, but the comparison depends on your tariff, your usage and whether you are on natural gas or LPG.

What is the difference between natural gas and LPG?

+

Natural gas is reticulated to the property; LPG is delivered in bottles. Units are configured for one or the other, and running costs differ, so the right choice depends on what is available at your address.

Why has my gas system stopped heating?

+

Common causes are pilot or ignition failure, a failed thermocouple, gas supply issues, or a fault in the control valve. These are diagnosed on site rather than guessed at.

Can a gas storage system be installed indoors?

+

Some models are flued for indoor installation and others are outdoor-only. Clearances, flueing and ventilation all have to be right, which is why the model is chosen to suit the location rather than the other way around.
